We Rejoice in the Righteous Fight
On June 16, 2021, Right to Life League Executive Director Theresa Brennan addressed the crowd at the Los Angeles Students for Life Rally–one of seven rallies taking place simultaneously across the country. Below is the text of her speech.
Each of us is made in the image and likeness of God. But when we look at what we have built together, we do not see His Kingdom. Instead we see babies being torn – limb from limb, ripped from their mother’s wombs, their dismembered body parts laid out on a petri dish to be counted, and their tiny corpses thrown into landfills. The blood of millions of these defenseless victims splatters the pages of every pro-abortion law passed and of every pro-abortion precedent set by our courts. These are the laws of OUR nation.
How can we claim that we are the “likeness of God” when unbelievable atrocities are being legally committed right before our eyes? Every Catholic — every Christian — should reel at the horror of what we, as a nation, permit. Yet, some of our Catholic politicians openly support and actually defend this mass genocide of innocent victims.
This is a terrible, evil battle we are fighting and our moral consciences demand that we speak out against this evil. It used to be that abortion advocates thought that abortion should be “safe, legal and rare.” Today, abortion is common, on demand and celebrated. National television awards shows celebrate abortion. Tik Tok videos of teens gleefully escorting a friend to have her abortion make it look like a “girls night out” party.
Today abortion supporters freely admit the science involved – they admit that it is a baby – and they still say that the woman’s right to choose is the most important thing. That killing a baby is justifiable because of the inconvenience to the mother. They ask “Why should she have to go through the trouble of carrying the baby to term?” Stop and think about the horror of that for just a minute.
When his disciples asked why he spoke in parables, Christ said: “This is why I speak to them in parables: ‘Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand……this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise, they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’ “
Let us pray. Dear Lord, as our Catholic Bishops gather for the spring general assembly, send your Holy Spirit upon them. Open their eyes to see your Sacred Heart. Open their ears to hear your Sacred Word. Inspire their hearts with courage to defend the Faith. Heal our nation which is grieving from so much loss. Heal our Church – the bride of Christ. Heal our Catholic politicians and turn their hearts towards you. Just as you did with St. Paul, you can change their hearts and minds in an instant. Fill the hearts of our Catholic politicians and bring them closer to You through true conversion. Amen.
Thank you for caring enough about this issue to come here today. The Right to Life League was founded in 1967, long before Roe v. Wade, for the very purpose of educating on the issue of abortion, when then-Governor Ronald Reagan signed the first therapeutic abortion bill in California. League Founders spoke with Reagan, who had already agreed to sign the bill. When he learned of the reality of abortion, because people like you went and spoke with him about this issue, his eyes were opened. He assured League founders he would never sign another pro-abortion bill again – and he kept that word.
Please, encourage your friends in this battle. You make a huge difference when you approach your representatives — especially if they support abortion. You are planting seeds that God can use to change the world. Please learn about and speak against the bills going through the California legislature right now – like Senate Bill 245 which will remove all co-pays and deductibles for abortion – making abortion totally free in California. And Senate Bill 742 which makes it ILLEGAL to pray or protest in front of any Planned Parenthood that provides vaccines of any sort. Raise your voice to oppose laws that encourage abortion and muzzle pro-life advocacy.
Today, we ask our Bishops to take a strong stand against abortion and to hold pro-abortion politicians accountable. We support and stand firm with our Church leaders – consistently reminding our Catholic politicians that saying that they accept the doctrine of the Church, personally, but that they will not impose those beliefs on others is unacceptable. They cannot ignore the Truth the Church teaches. In the words of Martin Luther King, “In the end we will not remember the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”
