18 Aug No Room for Pro-Life in the Democrat Party?

Late last week, more than 100 Democrats affiliated with Democrats for Life signed a letter urging the party to change its abortion stance in this year’s platform. The letter urges the Democratic Party to adopt the abortion language from its 2000 platform, which recognized differences of opinion on abortion as a “source of strength” and welcomed Americans of all abortion stances.
The 2020 Democratic Party Platform states:
“Democrats believe that every woman should be able to access high-quality reproductive health care services, including safe and legal abortion. We will restore federal funding for Planned Parenthood, which provides vital preventive and reproductive health care for millions of women, especially low-income women and women of color, and LBGTQ+ people, including in underserved areas. Democrats oppose and will fight to overturn federal and state laws that create barriers to women’s reproductive health and rights. We will repeal the Hyde Amendement, and protect and codify Roe v. Wade.”
That is a dramatic change… one that alienates a sizable proportion of registered Democrats who are far from the unquestioning abortion supporters that their party demands them to be.
“In the US, pro-life Democrats have been a critical part of the coalition to expand voting rights, improve health care, and pass criminal justice reform,” stated the letter from disenfranchised pro-life Democrats.
“These accomplishments would not have been possible if the Democratic Party had in place a litmus test on abortion.”
Let us pray for all voters in our nation, that they feel empowered to take action at the polls; and let us pray for political candidates and politicians already in office, that they will listen to the voice of the people–and that they will follow their conscience to do what is right for our nation.
