A Gala Celebration of Life, the League, and Hope for the Future

Larry Elder was the keynote speaker for the League’s Bountiful Life Gala this past Friday, October 15th. He spoke about the importance of fathers in the family, and their impact on life issues affecting California and the nation, to a sold-out crowd at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles.

Theresa Brennan, President/ Executive Director of the Right to Life League, set the stage for Elder’s remarks in her moving address. “California, and especially Southern California, is locked in an epic battle for life. It is no exaggeration to say that Southern California is ground zero in this battle,” she said.

“Planned Parenthood Pasadena receives over $5 million in local donations each year, and that is not even counting the $15 million in income that they receive for their gruesome work. Our operating budget is less than 2% of theirs–but our impact is HUGE!” (You can watch her speech, as well as Larry Elder’s speech, starting at about 18:00 minutes.)

The numbers at left show the League’s huge life-saving impact over just the last year and a half.

“What we do at the Right to Life League to save lives throughout the entire state of California happens on less than 2% of Planned Parenthood Pasadena’s budget,” Brennan reminded gala attendees. “Think of the impact we could make if we had even 5% of Planned Parenthood’s budget.”

The League’s Board and executive team have a number of additional projects planned for the coming year, thanks to the generosity of this year’s Gala donations.

For instance, on its shoestring budget, the League testified in six legislative hearings in Sacramento, and sent letters to legislators explaining how certain bills threatened the innate right to life. Thanks to donor support, the League is exploring the launch of a 501(c)4 nonprofit organization to dramatically increase its ability to lobby for life in the state.

The League hired Kirsten Hersh, RN, to serve as a “substitute nurse” when a clinic’s staff nurse is out sick or unavailable, so the clinic does not have to shut down. Donor support will allow the League to expand this substitute nurse program across the state, adding more specially trained nurses able to serve clinics in every corner of California.

In response to the explosive growth of the abortion pill, the League is developing an affordable, scalable IT system for pro-life clinics across California to reach abortion-minded women through their cell phones and computers –and has already received $5000 in seed money to launch this program. More funding is needed to harness the power of marketing and geo-fencing to reach vulnerable women and counter Google’s ban on abortion pill reversal advertising.

Technology is also at the heart of the League’s ambitious plan to maintain ultrasound capability at its member clinics. The hand-held Butterfly Ultrasound Machine costs just $2400–and donor support will allow the League to ship Butterfly Ultrasound Machines to member clinics in rural areas so that no clinic is without live-saving ultrasound technology.
